Some of us got our first scare from a streaming horror flick. Some of us got it from a black-and-white movie on a Saturday afternoon, half-hiding behind a couch cushion while Frankenstein's monster shuffled across the screen. If you're in the second group, you already know why this week's new arrival is a big deal.
The Universal Monsters Funko Pop set of 4 just hit the shop: Frankenstein #1630, Bride of Frankenstein #1631, the Gill-Man #1632, and Dracula #1634. Every figure comes with one of our clear protector cases, because a monster this old deserves to age well.
A Little History
Universal built the first cinematic universe before anyone had a name for it. Dracula came out in 1931. Frankenstein followed nine months later. The Bride showed up in 1935 with the most famous hairdo in horror, and the Gill-Man crawled out of the Black Lagoon in 1954.
What made these movies last wasn't the scares. Boris Karloff played the creature as something sad, not just something dangerous. Lugosi's Dracula was more charming than most leading men of the era. Almost a hundred years later, these characters are still on t-shirts, tattoos, and now our shelves. Not many things can say that.
What You Get
Funko got the details right on this set. Frankenstein has the flat head and neck bolts. The Bride has the lightning streaks. The Gill-Man's scales are textured, and Dracula is mid-glare in his high collar, exactly how you remember him.
Lined up together, the four of them look like a movie marquee from 1935. That's the whole appeal. This isn't a set you buy one figure at a time.
Yes, It's July. Buy the Horror Pops Anyway.
Collectors know the spooky stuff never waits for October. If you're building out a horror corner, start with these four and go from there. Formal Sally #1380 from The Nightmare Before Christmas is a natural next pick, especially with the 30th anniversary treatment. And while the Darth Maul Hologram Glow-in-the-Dark #740 is technically sci-fi, turn the lights off and tell us it doesn't belong.
There are no rules here. Mix eras, mix franchises. It's your shelf.
One Honest Warning
Legacy-franchise sets like this usually get one production run. When they sell out, aftermarket prices go up and stay up. We stocked a limited number of these bundles, and our other recent arrivals, like the Jungle Book set of 4 (Baloo, Bagheera, Hathi Jr., and King Louie on his throne), have been moving. We'd rather you get it now at $54.99 than on eBay next year for double.
Come Get Your Monsters
Nearly a century after Dracula first hit theaters, these four are still the most recognizable monsters ever put on film. Now they fit on a bookshelf. And shipping's free, so the price you see is the price you pay.
Grab the Universal Monsters set at Blue Salamander Emporium while we still have them.
